The principal choreographer and instructor of this Group is Marla Goonawardane who has conducted lessons in contemporary oriental dancing during the past twenty years. Marla picked up her oriental dancing while at school in Sri Lanka in her tender years and her love of the art continued unabated even after immigrating to New Zealand in early 1970’s.
MDG Dancing Group under the guidance of Marla Goonawardane is to promote Sri Lankan contemporary oriental dancing in New Zealand with a touch of glamour and entertainment. In the past twenty years several generations of children and youth have graduated through the school, endeavouring to give a taste of innovative adaptations to the wider New Zealand community. Marla’s dancing adaptations ranged from a mixture of traditional Vannam style dances to popular folk dances including Kalagedi, Leekeli Netum to more rhythmic western style Kaffrinna which captured the interest of wider New Zealand public.
